A volcanic crater lake is the remnant of a volcanic eruption. Once the mountain has blown its top you are left with a crater that will fill with water in time, creating the crater lake. São Miguel has the most beautiful crater lakes or lagoons created by nature. Most are accessible by car or trail.

     Lagoa do Canàrio Lagoon

Lagoa do Canàrio is very close to the villa . You can drive up to the trail head and choose to continue on foot or you can take a leisurely stroll up the road and stop at some breathtaking lookouts.

   Lagoa do Fogo Lagoon    

The name says it all, lagoa do Fogo, the lagoon of fire. You can drive up a very high peak and take in the views. You can also take a Memorable hike up the mountain, bring plenty agua das pedras (local spring water) with you.

     Lagoa das Furnas    

Furnas, pronounced like Furnace, is definitely a hot spot. This lagoon is beautiful and a great place to spend the day while your lunch is cooking 6 feet under the volcanic soil. Local specialty, a must have!

 Lagoa das Sete Cidades Lagoon  

This is the most famous of lagoons of all. The vista do rei lookout is remarkable. It is also a short drive from the villa. Be sure to visit the village of Sete Cidades below where you will find cafés, a tea house and restaurants. You can also paddle board, kayak and enjoy other sports at the crater level.
